Yogis and Spinsters rejoice! The newest, coolest fitness club in Phoenix has finally opened its über hip doors. The Madison Improvement Club is here―and here to stay. Owner Andrew Varela, a Phoenix native who grew up in Arcadia, hand-picked a rockstar-roster of teachers who know how to get the workout party started: Gina Marciano, Anton Mackey, Jenn Chiarelli and Alex Austin, to name a few.
I downward dogged and detoxed my weekend away in Max Cohen’s Sunday morning class, lovin’ every minute of his banter and beats. The class was wall-to-wall packed and the energy infectious. No wonder there was a little more spring to my standing splits and a little more chutzpah to my chaturangas (thanks Max!).
Rather than running off after class, I filled my tank at Seed, the on-site café that serves up deliciously healthy fare from homemade energy bars to super stacked sandwiches (they come with a side of tabbouleh – yum!). I went with A Bigger Yard, a green smoothie with spinach, kale, pineapple, mango and coconut water that gave me just the post-class kick I needed.
The Madison also has a brag-worthy spin studio that offers funkadelic theme rides, like a black light ride or a Britney-themed class. The cutting edge lighting, all controlled by computer, can go from blue to pink to starry, starry night for an extra dose of dance party.
You will sweat. A lot. The 60+ spin and yoga classes offered each week are designed to push your limits; get you out of the saddle and out of your downward dog comfort zone. You’ll love the studio’s light and airy feel and the oxygen high that comes with every class.
